az elk tags
Well got 2 az elk tags in the family,

The wife drew an early archery bull tag, and kiddo #2 ( aka Annie Oakley) drew a jr's only cow tag. SHould be lots of elk meat in the freezer this fall. And of course the wife is all excited about the opportunity to put a bull on the wall before I do.

Re: az elk tags
Cool, did she draw in a good unit?  I have never looked into hunting AZ myself, but I hear that tags are scarce.  How long did it take her to draw?

Re: az elk tags
She drew one of the limited opportunity hunts, with multiple units that she can hunt. I have a friend who leases land in one of them , so have a significant "in".. LOL.. as to how long has she been after the tag. Depends on how you want to look at it. She had 8 points going into the draw. But most of those were purchased as points instead of a not drawn point. There have been several years where she asked not to be put into the draw so I got her a point instead. But this year she asked to apply for a tag, and actually drew one. Now the question being .. is she going to try and fill it. AS she runs mostly on whim, that one willbe up in the air until the exact moment a bull gets in front of her and she chooses to release the arrow. And of course she reserves the chance to change her mind on the hunt anytime prior to or during the hunt. LOL>.. Got to love her. She has been on several hunts but has yet to have a shot at anything. So have no idea on how she will react.

THe kiddo on the other hand has already filled 2 tags, and is now looking to fill the freezer with her favorite food.. Elk steaks.... So the only worry about that one is finding a rifle with enough medicine for elk that an petite 11 year old can handle. I figure on getting a muzzle break and good recoil pad for the 06. if that dosent work might step down to the low recoil ammo. and go from there.

Re: az elk tags

Man that awesome Shane.. Looks like your going to have your work cut out for you but boy will it be fun.. I have some friends who have 40 acres in N AZ they have a lot of elk and deer on the property.. they tell me I can hunt it any season I want.. Just can't afford those out of state prices.. Same with Montana have some friends there above Greatfall with lots of elk they keep telling me to come up a shoot one. but at 1K just for the tag wayout of my price range.

Any way make sure to keep us posted on how these hunts go and post the stories and pictures. Looking forward to reading them and enving the pictures..

Re: az elk tags
Gordy,

AZ elk tags arent quite as expensive as up north. Non resident tags are $595 this year + $151.50 for the license. So not quite as bad . The big problem down here is actually drawing the tags. By the numbers Setting aside the limited opportunity hunts, you can average an archery bull rut tag about every 7 years. So looks like I will have to wait until about 2015-17 for another one. LOL... And of course there are almost always archery cow tags left over. So once I get a big bull for the wall I will start putting in for cow more. Then it will be freezer filling time.
