Turkey Hunt

Good time no turkey... Well the morning to the 20th load up and headed out about 1PM. reached the happy hunting ground ( Bow area only) about 3PM. Everyone and their brothers sons were running around there. I figured that is ok , they will be gone soon. Set on camp and srtuck out to where I was to set up my blind and decoys. Tracks from people are all over the place. I'm thinking maybe ther ran the birds out but I'll give the place a try anyway. Was back in camp about 5:30 PM. not a soul to be found. Had the place all to my self. I'm felling good. Built me a nice little fire popped open a beer and start to cooking. I kicked it at the fire until about 8:30 then hit the sack.

5AM I'm setting out the decoys and in the blind. I shock gobble nothing.  Hmm not good maybe they did move out, but then last time I was here the were not in here until about 10AM. I'll wait. About every 30 to 45 minutes I hit the box or slate nothing. Time moves on. 11AM rolls around and nothing not a sound or turkey sighted. Ok time to find them . Off I go. I decide to make a loop around the area of about 6 miles. As I hunt I hit the crow, box or slate call about every 15 to 20 minutes after hiking for about 45 minutes I locate a hen in an area I have never been in before. I'm getting excited a turkey if she is here a tom maybe around. I search the whole area she is the only bird around not surprized as she was nesting already. I move on.. following the same routine hitting one of my calls every 15 to 20 minutes. After hiking around for I find a stream I didn't know about. In an area that burned last year. I thinking this should be a good place to both turkey hunt and deer hunt when that season comes in. I commance to check the stream out. It was not a running stream but it had a pool here and a pool there all were good size and about 2-3ft deep. About 5 seperate pools of water. As I come to the best looking one low and behold what do I see !!!  A blind with some turkey decoys about 40 yards from the water.  so as not to bust his set up I keep on moving with out stopping near that blind. As I was going to try sitting and calling there. About a mile later I'm on the road. Since it is burned acrossed the road I decide to walk the road back tours camp. About a 1/4 mile down the road their is a truck with turkey tracks near it on the road. I'm thinking there he sits in his blind and all he had to do was stay near his truck to arrow a turkey. About 1/2 miles down I head up over the hill by way of a side road  and find another truck parked above where I have my blind  is set up. I go down into my blind after 4 hours of searching for them birds.  Back at camp around 6PM replay of the night before.

Set my alarm for 4AM. but forgot to pull out the ringer. I wake at 5AM on the button. Jump up and head out as quickly as I can headed for my blind. I get about half way there when I hear gobble gobble.. I hit the slate and fire back he replies. I reply, he replies. I wait Hoping he will come in. I hear him gobble again in a few minutes he is moving away. I hit the slate a couple of times hoping to bring him back no luck he keeps heading away. I try to follow them but they are getting ferther away. I note the direction they are going. Then I know I must make a deccision. Do I pursue them or let them go. I elect to let them go. They were headed to the area I found the water. Since I had no way of knowing if that other hunter was over there I figured I shouldn't take the chance of spooking the birds from him just in case he was in there. I headed back it my blind. Hunted until noon then broke down my set up and headed back to break camp. That's my story and I'm sticking to it...

Re: Turkey Hunt
Sounds like a normal turkey hunt to me. Only minus the birds and gobbling all together. Other then that sounds about right. Lots of walking and calling and absoutely nothing in return other then blisters and sore legs. ,, Oh and the tracks by the truck. Thats always there.

Re: Turkey Hunt

That many hunters would make me nervous, especially turkey hunting.  I hunted public land in the Black Hills of SD, last week.  Never saw another hunter in three days, except for in the restaurants at night.  If there was a truck at a trailhead we just found somewhere else to go.  Plenty of land out there.

We saw plenty of birds and got lots of responses but the birds were still flocked up and wouldn't come in.

I am going to try a little hunting on public land in CT this week.  I never really hunting public land in CT for turkey's before, but I lost all my good private land areas.  If there are bunch of vehicles in there before me, I will probably go back to bed.

Re: Turkey Hunt
Toonces, hunt mid week if you can. the birds should be settled down and you won't have all the nut cases out there.
